Workshop at the Ranch – March 2006 – Let the Games Begin…

2006MarchWATR0-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. I have always enjoyed covering the Olympic Games and in particular, the Opening Ceremonies. First, let me say, I liked these ceremonies as much as any that I have attended during the 12 Olympic Games I have been privileged to document. The Opening Ceremonies mark the beginning of the largest sporting event on the planet. If the opportunity is presented to any of you to cover an Olympic Games, take it……you’ll never work so hard or be rewarded so much. Let the Games begin………….. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – February 2006 – My Moody Blue Location Lighting Formula

2006FebWATR-iconHi, and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. By the time this issue is posted I will already be in Torino, Italy covering the Winter Olympics. I will not be reading or responding to any emails during the month of February…so please save your questions and emails for sometime in March…thanks.

This past year I received more emails requesting additional instruction using the Nikon SB800 Speedlights than any other topic. These little giants of light have brought new life to my location portraiture and even some action assignments. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – January 2006 – Answers to Popular Questions

2006JanWATR-iconHi and welcome to the January 2006 issue of Workshop at the Ranch. As the number of monthly readers climbs well beyond 15,000 the number of emails has also increased dramatically over the past few years. While most of the emails are “thank you’s” from readers who have been learning and applying the suggestions and techniques I address in my Workshop at the Ranch and On The Road articles many emails I receive have additional questions regarding photography. Here are answers to some popular questions I have been asked over the past 3 years ………………………… Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – November 2005 – Building a Portrait

2005NovWATR-iconWelcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. For the last several years I have been invited to teach at one of the best workshops I know. Rich Clarkson’s Photography at the Summit workshop ( www.richclarkson.com ) is a wonderful blend of faculty environment and students that addresses many aspects of photography while in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. One of my responsibilities is conducting a location lighting class using Nikon’s SB800 Speedlights. The more I use these units the more fascinated I am with the possibilities to do creative lighting scenarios. Many thanks go out to Craig Ramsby, Director of Jackson Hole’s Polo program at Melody Ranch who provided our class with one of his top athletes as a model. These five images are the step by step progressions our class used to build a portrait with Nikon SB800s. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – October 2005 – Game Coverage…..My Way

2005OctWATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. Football season is well under way and if you’re a sports photographer you probably find yourself each Saturday and Sunday running up and down the sidelines of various football stadiums across the country. I have been shooting college and pro football for 23 seasons and still enjoy going to the games. However, I tend to have a different way of covering a game than many of today’s photographers. Each time I go to a game I try to envision capturing images that one might see in a coffee table book……..total coverage, not just action but a total package that would make anyone who saw my images feel like they had been there with me. With this in mind let’s have a look at Game Coverage….My Way. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – September 2005 – Equipment…and How It Can Help A Career

2005SeptWATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. I receive anywhere from 50-130 emails per week with questions about photography from well over 13,000 photographers that come to On the Road and Workshop at the Ranch on a regular basis. One of the most common questions I hear has to do with careers and how one might “make it” as a sports photographer. There are many things that go into the making of a successful career. I’m going to address one of the most commonly talked about topics, the importance that equipment and the ability to use it plays in being successful in today’s photographic industry……………… Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – August 2005 – Fill Flash….It’s not Just For Portraits

2005AugWATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. By now you may have read the current issue of On The Road and have seen the image of Trapeze. The director of the Trapeze program is Bobby Penotti who encouraged the participants at both International Gymnastics Camp and International Sports Training Camp to experience this terrific blend of physical and mental training. The brochure would need a strong Trapeze image because of its popularity each year with students. Many of the Trapeze training sessions occurred when the sun was directly overhead. This “Top Lit” situation can be very difficult to photograph if I need to see my subjects face and hold the sky exposure to a deep blue. The use of strobes to “Fill Flash” the shadowed subject is the solution and the Nikon SB800 Speedlight System with iTTL would be my choice of equipment…….Let’s take a look. Workshop at the Ranch – July 2005 – Rock On!

2005JulyWATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. I am always looking for something new when it comes to making pictures and expanding my photographic horizon. Rock climbing was not a venue I had in mind but I’m all “AMPED UP” thanks to the enthusiasm of fellow photographer Keith Ladzinski. Keith is a very talented photographer who covers a variety of outdoor adventure sports. During lunch the other day he mentioned something about Night Rock Climbing and the wheels began turning in my head…..Keith’s expertise of both photography and climbing inspired me to say…OK…..Let’s do it! So, here’s a look………. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – June 2005 – Remote Cameras at Churchill Downs

2005JuneWATR-iconHi and welcome to the June issue of Workshop at the Ranch. If you have read the June issue of On The Road then you are aware that horse racing is my favorite sport to photograph, so I decided to continue the horse racing images I captured from Derby Week at Churchill Downs. The use of remote cameras is fast becoming more of a requirement for the sports photographer. A remote camera is often used in a location that the photographer cannot physically be in…example: under the inside rail at horse racing. Sometimes a remote camera is used to capture additional images…example: a floor remote at basketball might be located directly in front of me. The remote captures additional images with a different lens while I shoot with a hand held camera. I rarely use more than 2 remote cameras at any venue. Photographers like Skip Dickstein tend to use 10 or even more to cover the Kentucky Derby. Let’s take a look at some images I captured with remote cameras…….. Continue reading article →
