Workshop at the Ranch – May 2010 – Little Lights, BIG Arena – PART 2

2010-May-WATR-iconHi and welcome to PART 2 of Little Lights, BIG Arena. Last month was a mammoth article that really sparked the interest of many sports photographers and generated lots of email requests for a continuing lesson at different venue. Well, here we go again. Let’s look at another sports facility where I strobed action using my Nikon SB-900 Speedlights, but this time with a different purpose in mind as I’ll only need 4 Speedlights in a classic rectangular arrangement.

Workshop at the Ranch – April 2010 – Little Lights, BIG Arena – PART 1

2010-April-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch on steroids. There is a lot of information and data in this very extensive article. Don’t give up, but hold on to the end and I think you’ll be glad you did.

With March Madness (basketball) and the Frozen Four (ice hockey) near memories I wanted to share with all of you who come read these monthly tutorials something I learned this college indoor sports season. I can strobe light a sports arena with Nikon Speedlights. Yes, that’s correct. This season I left my sizable collection of arena sport strobes in the garage and traveled “light” so to speak. Workshop at the Ranch – July 2009 – FourSquare Sensation

2009-July-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this slightly late edition of Workshop at the Ranch. First off, my apologies for being late with this months article, but I wanted to feature a new piece of equipment I have been using, and using a lot! As most of you who read my monthly articles here at Workshop at the Ranch know, I love the Nikon Speedlight system and currently use the Nikon SB-900 Speedlights for many of my projects. While I do some work in the studio I tend to find myself doing the majority of my image making outdoors. Over powering the intense Colorado sunshine requires a lot of light and I have found that 4 Nikon SB-900 Speedlights does a wonderful job of allowing me to use light creatively outdoors even at high noon. But holding and aiming 4 off camera flash units at a moving subject can be difficult, what with the sensors needing to line up with the commander. And when a soft box is used the sensors rarely line up with the commander. With the idea of overpowering the sun using multiple off camera flash units … meet the FourSquare. Workshop at the Ranch – May 2009 – Sports Shooter Academy

2009-May-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. This past month was exciting for me. The release of my book The Way I See It … 50 One Page Workshops went well and the feedback from those who purchased it are very favorable. Oddly enough, I received some emails asking where they could purchase the book … As this is a self published book that is printed one book at a time “on demand” it is only available through my website, … just CLICK the book cover icon to read a book review with example pages on last months Workshop at the Ranch. Workshop at the Ranch – May 2005 – Arena Sport Strobe Lighting 102

may05-5-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. Last month we discussed arena sport strobe lighting where I showed a step by step set up of sport strobes and gave examples from a recent boxing tournament. This month I would like to continue that thought process with some additional images from past assignments that required sport strobe lighting. (I recommend that you read the 2005 April WATR “Arena Sport Strobe Lighting 101” to help you better understand this continuation article.) We are going to START SMALL and work our way up to something BIG, but keep in mind that all I am doing is arranging my lights in a similar set up to those used for studio portraits. The difference being a larger “studio”…. a gym or arena. Also,”Sport Strobes” have a very fast/short flash duration instead of studio strobes that have a slower and longer flash duration (see 2005 April Workshop at the Ranch.) So, let’s get to it…………… Continue reading article →
