Workshop at the Ranch – July 2009 – FourSquare Sensation

2009-July-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this slightly late edition of Workshop at the Ranch. First off, my apologies for being late with this months article, but I wanted to feature a new piece of equipment I have been using, and using a lot! As most of you who read my monthly articles here at Workshop at the Ranch know, I love the Nikon Speedlight system and currently use the Nikon SB-900 Speedlights for many of my projects. While I do some work in the studio I tend to find myself doing the majority of my image making outdoors. Over powering the intense Colorado sunshine requires a lot of light and I have found that 4 Nikon SB-900 Speedlights does a wonderful job of allowing me to use light creatively outdoors even at high noon. But holding and aiming 4 off camera flash units at a moving subject can be difficult, what with the sensors needing to line up with the commander. And when a soft box is used the sensors rarely line up with the commander. With the idea of overpowering the sun using multiple off camera flash units … meet the FourSquare. 2009-June-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. By now many of you have either looked at the images and review of my recently released book, or perhaps bought a copy of The Way I See It … 50 One Page Workshops. For those who bought a copy and took the time to send me an email with comments, thank you so much. It is helpful to read your encouraging words and comments. Many of the emails asked if I could explain the Self Publishing process in a Workshop at the Ranch article. Great idea, glad you thought of it. With self publishing as our topic, let’s take a look at the possibilities with what is better known in the business as Print On Demand publishing. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – April 2009 – My Book is Available!

2009-April-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this very special edition of Workshop at the Ranch. My book is now Available! That was fun to say … think I’ll say it again …MY BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE. The Way I See It … 50 One Page Workshops is only available through my website.

The idea of publishing my own book had been kicking around in my head for a while, but became more than just a thought back in December after a conversation with good friend, photographer, John Shaw. He talked to me about the idea of self-publishing and that some very prominent photographers were using Blurb.com.    With John’s encouragement I began investigating Blurb.com and was so impressed with their program and page layout selection that I made a very short “TEST” book shortly before the Christmas holiday. I was blown away when I received a finished book only 10 days after submission. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – February 2009 – The Nikon D3X….Part 1

2009-Feb-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. First let me say thank you to all of you who took the time to write me an email with your book idea. Hundreds of emails arrived during the month of January and enlightened me on what you would like to see in a book. Nearly 95% of the emails suggested the same format and topics, that being large pictures, Workshop at the Ranch teaching, and a variety of subjects ranging from Sports to Arena Lighting, to Speedlights and Lightpainting. So be it! I’m pleased to say the book is already under way and I am thrilled that so many of you were willing to share your thoughts. I hope to have it available for purchase this Spring. Thank you all so much for your ideas. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – December 2008 – Year in Review

2008-Dec-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. The year of 2008 saw a wide variety of articles grace the computer screens of well over 100,000 readers of Workshop at the Ranch each month. As my own photography broadens and my business continues to grow I tried to bring current projects, techniques, equipment, and data to my writings each month. From making merged images into PANORAMAS to Location Lighting for Portraits, and Lightpainting Landscapes to SB-900 Action Images, I poured a great deal of effort, thought, and time into every article. Here is a look back at 2008. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – November 2008 – Action with the SB-900 Speedlights

2008-Nov-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. When I get excited about a piece of equipment that allows me to make better pictures I want to tell everyone all about it and how to use it. This long and detailed Workshop at the Ranch article’s purpose is to present to you both a valuable tool for lighting and step by step instruction on how to use it. For several years now the Nikon SB-800 Speedlight system has been my trusty side kick for many assignments and photo shoots. No other flash unit could compare to the technology, performance, and reliability that the Nikon SB-800 offered, that is course until the release of the Nikon SB-900 Speedlight. I hope this months article not only conveys some of the new and improved features of the Nikon SB-900 Speedlight, but also teaches you how to use them when making action images. Workshop at the Ranch – October 2008 – Lightpainting Under the Stars

2008-October-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. First let me apologize for this slightly late edition. Sometimes phone lines need repairs and sometimes these repairs take a few days and sometimes even after the repairs are completed the internet still doesn’t work and additional repairs are needed. Well, let’s move on. I was teaching at Rich Clarkson’s Photography at the Summit ( www.richclarkson.com ) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming recently. It is my favorite place to be in the fall. At the conclusion of the evening presentations I do what I have done for several years now, go out into night and make a Lightpainting before joining the workshops participants at the Silver Dollar. As you can see this months Workshop at the Ranch is all about Lightpainting outdoor landscapes. Not just any scene mind you, but scenes that include the vast western night sky over Jackson Hole, and the Teton Mountain Range. Continue reading article →
