Workshop at the Ranch – July 2009 – FourSquare Sensation
Hi and welcome to this slightly late edition of Workshop at the Ranch. First off, my apologies for being late with this months article, but I wanted to feature a new piece of equipment I have been using, and using a lot! As most of you who read my monthly articles here at Workshop at the Ranch know, I love the Nikon Speedlight system and currently use the Nikon SB-900 Speedlights for many of my projects. While I do some work in the studio I tend to find myself doing the majority of my image making outdoors. Over powering the intense Colorado sunshine requires a lot of light and I have found that 4 Nikon SB-900 Speedlights does a wonderful job of allowing me to use light creatively outdoors even at high noon. But holding and aiming 4 off camera flash units at a moving subject can be difficult, what with the sensors needing to line up with the commander. And when a soft box is used the sensors rarely line up with the commander. With the idea of overpowering the sun using multiple off camera flash units … meet the FourSquare. Continue reading article

Hi and welcome to this packed edition of Workshop at the Ranch featuring Part II of the NEW Nikon D3X review. I felt the readers of Workshop at the Ranch might want some additional images and commentary on this remarkable piece of equipment. This month’s images are a wide variety ranging from the studio, to climbing along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, to indoor sports using the D3X with arena strobe lighting and remote camera work. With Nikon D3X Part I somewhat behind us, let’s review a few things I mentioned last month and then move on to some new pictures.

Hundreds of emails arrived during the month of January and enlightened me on what you would like to see in a book. Nearly 95% of the emails suggested the same format and topics, that being large pictures, Workshop at the Ranch teaching, and a variety of subjects ranging from Sports to Arena Lighting, to Speedlights and Lightpainting. So be it! I’m pleased to say the book is already under way and I am thrilled that so many of you were willing to share your thoughts. I hope to have it available for purchase this Spring. Thank you all so much for your ideas.

Hi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. The year of 2008 saw a wide variety of articles grace the computer screens of well over 100,000 readers of Workshop at the Ranch each month. As my own photography broadens and my business continues to grow I tried to bring current projects, techniques, equipment, and data to my writings each month. From making merged images into PANORAMAS to Location Lighting for Portraits, and Lightpainting Landscapes to SB-900 Action Images, I poured a great deal of effort, thought, and time into every article. Here is a look back at 2008.

This long and detailed Workshop at the Ranch article’s purpose is to present to you both a valuable tool for lighting and step by step instruction on how to use it. For several years now the Nikon SB-800 Speedlight system has been my trusty side kick for many assignments and photo shoots. No other flash unit could compare to the technology, performance, and reliability that the Nikon SB-800 offered, that is course until the release of the Nikon SB-900 Speedlight. I hope this months article not only conveys some of the new and improved features of the Nikon SB-900 Speedlight, but also teaches you how to use them when making action images.
