Workshop at the Ranch – March 2011 – Lightpainting Part 2, Macro Subjects

2011-March-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. We are continuing this month with Part 2 of our Lightpainting series, and will be exploring the small world of Macro Lightpaintings. First let me answer the question, why Lightpaint? Why not use a studio strobe or flash? There is something about the way Lightpainting allows the photographer to feather and brush the light onto the subject that makes it distinctively different from a studio flashed image. By moving the light source continually (swirling and brushing) during the long exposure I can wrap light around my subject. I can create pockets of light and soft transitional edges in ways that other lighting systems cannot. The look is very stylized and unique, and produces a one of a kind image. Workshop at the Ranch – February 2011 – Lightpainting Part 1, The Basics

2011-February-WATR-iconHi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. I spent the better part of 2010 working on projects that involved the fastest lighting technique possible using Nikon Speedlights, High Speed Sync mode, and ultra fast shutter speeds. Well, we are about to make a 180 degree about-face and embark on a series of articles that will cater to the slowest lighting technique of all, Lightpainting. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – September 2010 – Rock Light

Hi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. The learning continues this month as I pack up my gear and hit the road again in my quest to photograph Sports Acton with SB-900 Speedlights. With the success of Speedlighting kayaking on the Arkansas River I decided to stay with the adventure sport theme and reach for new heights. Climbing has always interested me and thanks to my good friend Keith Ladzinski (…you must check out his website at: www.ladzinski.com I have had the opportunity to get aquatinted with this amazing sport and the way he photographs it. Keith tends to stretch the limits when it comes to lighting climbers and so I turned to his experience and advise when making my arrangements to climb to higher ground regarding this next sports action with Speedlights project. Workshop at the Ranch – August 2010 – Kayak Light

Hi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. It amazes me what can be done with self-publishing. Thanks to my good friend Bob Smith and Wind River Creative I was able to release my book, The Way I See It. There are now 3 ways to get my book and learn about how I have made pictures over the last 30 years.

Well, here we go again with Sports Action and Nikon SB-900 Speedlights. This month’s venue is a challenging one, whitewater kayaking. For the 75,000 of you who are regular monthly readers of Workshop at the Ranch you already know where I’m going with this project, but for those of you who are new to my quest to photograph sports action with Speedlights, let me say welcome to the future.

Workshop at the Ranch – July 2010 – Moto Light

Hi and welcome to this edition of Workshop at the Ranch. My quest to capture Sports Action with Speedlights continues in this month’s article as I light-up motocross racing. Although I have been “Speedlighting” motocross for several years the advancement in technology and new products made this day in the dust easier and more consistent than ever. With the last three Workshop at the Ranch articles being long and packed with new information, this article promises to be shorter and more concise, but no less informative. So, let’s get to it and throttle down another sport using Nikon SB-900 Speedlights, the FourSquare, Radio Poppers PX, and Michael Bass Design Fiber Optic Bundles. Continue reading article →

Workshop at the Ranch – June 2010 – West Coast Flash

2010-June-WATR-iconBefore I get started on this month’s tutorial I wanted to mention that I have just released my book; The Way I See It … 50 One Page Workshops as an ebook download. Although the hard cover edition of The Way I See It … was very well received, many of you requested a more convenient ebook download. This ebook version is the hard cover coffee table book edition with all the same chapters, large images, technical lessons and stories, and complete camera data with equipment lists. It is less expensive at $29.95. An in-depth book review can be found here
