On The Road
"People of Willoq, Peru"
December, 2006
Hi and welcome to this edition of On the Road.
By now you may have read the December issue of Workshop at the
Ranch that documents my recent trip to Peru. This edition of On
the Road is an in-depth look at the people who live in the remote
mountain village of Willoq, Peru. Certainly one of the highlights
of the American PHOTO Trek for me was photographing these wonderful
people. Their genuine openness and warmth towards our group made
our visit both memorable and rewarding. We arrived after the sun
had set behind the mountain peeks which made the landscape of
this high elevation community seem almost colorless. This near
monochromatic terrain was a perfect backdrop for the brilliantly
colored ancestral clothing that the people of Willoq commonly
wore. I decided to make use of my SB800 as an off camera Remote
Speedlight to compensate for the dark conditions and help illuminate
my subjects. These images were photographed using my Nikon D200
Camera, Nikon 17-55mm Lens, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, One SB800 as a
Remote Speedlight and the D200 in camera Speedlight Master to
trigger the SB800. I had no assistant but simply held the SB800
in my left hand while extending my left arm to achieve an off
camera strobe position. Here are the people of Willoq ................
Image
#1 Young Girl of Willoq ... As our group walked from the
bus through the small village I noticed the villagers were
very excited. There was a welcoming festival going on across
the stream that divided the village. This young girl was
just leaving her home and walking down to where the villagers
had gathered to greet us. Nikon D200, ISO320, 1/200 at f4,
Nikon 17-55mm Lens, WB 8300K, Nikon SB800 Speedlight in
Remote mode (power output -2) using the In Camera Master,
Lexar 4G Flash Card. I dialed down the power output of the
SB800 so that only a tiny amount of light would "clean"
my subject but not look flashed or have a harsh shadow.

#2 Woman of Willoq ... This picture is similar to Image #1
and was taken for the same reason. That being the contrast
between the colorless environment and the beautiful colored
clothing. I also wanted to portray these women in their everyday
activity. This woman is walking up to the main village area
from the festival area. Nikon D200, ISO320, 1/160 at f4, Nikon
17-55mm Lens, WB 8300K, Nikon SB800 Speedlight in Remote mode
( power output -2 ) using the D200 in camera Master, Lexar
4G Flash Card. |

#3 Willoq Couple ... This was one of those situations were
the subjects approached me and posed for the picture of
which I was more than pleased to accommodate them. In this
situation I am more accustomed to documenting what I'm experiencing
rather than orchestrating the scene but was delighted with
the image as were the lovely couple. Nikon D200, ISO200,
1/1250 at f3.5 (1 stop underexposure for the sunlit mountains
and sky), Nikon 17-55mm Lens, WB 7100K, Nikon SB800 Speedlight
in Remote mode ( power output +1 ) using the D200 in camera
Master, Lexar 4G Flash Card. This is a good example of the
versatility of the SB800 Speedlights. I can set my shutter
speed above the normal flash sync speed of 1/250 and expose
for the mountains while revealing my subject with the Speedlight.

#4 Young Boy of Willoq ... This young boy was part of a
very curious group of children who liked the SB800 Speedlight
when it flashed. I think they thought of it as part of a
game we were playing. I would take a picture as they played
around me, running and chasing each other. It was fun for
me, fun for them and resulted in some fun images of the
children. Nikon D200, ISO250, 1/25 at f5.6 ( 1 stop underexposure
for the sky), Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7100K, Nikon SB800
Speedlight in Remote mode (power output +1) using the D200
in camera Master, Lexar 4G Flash Card.

#5 Child of Willoq ... This little guy was most likely the
younger brother of the boy in Image #4, but was not as eager
to join in on the fun and games. He just stood next to me
for about 5 minutes and watched the others whirl around. So
I took a picture of him from my taller perspective. Nikon
D200, ISO250, 1/25 at f5.6, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7100K,
Nikon SB800 Speedlight ( power output +1 ) using the D200
in camera Master, Lexar 4G Flash Card. |

#6 Festival Women of Willoq ... The festival got into full
swing after dark so we were encouraged to join in the dancing.
I followed these women into a circle of dancing but kept my
eye focused on the baby. When the infant turned and looked
at me I made one picture. Nikon D200, ISO250, 1/15 at f16,
Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7100K, Nikon SB800 Speedlight ( power
output +1 ) using the D200 in camera Master, Lexar 4G Flash
Card. |
This was a real experience for myself
and our Trekkers who captured many great pictures during our visit
to Willoq. The application of fill flash using the Nikon SB800
Speedlight and in camera Master made these images colorful and
creative.
I hope you all have enjoyed this very different
On The Road adventure and look forward to having you visit me
again next month On The Road ................... Adios, Dave
