On The Road
"Gone Fishing"
November, 2008
Hi and welcome to this lazy edition of On the
Road, or better said, "on the river." Once in a great
while I try to take a break, slow down and lounge around, but
that usually lasts all of about 20 minutes, and then I'm back
at it again. Each year when the Rich Clarkson's Photography at
the Summit workshop ends I stop working and take one day to fly
fish on the Snake River with my good friend Ron Taniwaki. A full
day floating down the snake, wetting a line, and hoping for the
coveted "Trout Buck" is just what the Doctor ordered,
but, I just can't help myself to 5 hours of peaceful drifting
without making a few pictures. So, let's go fishing.

#1 Grand Bend ... We
met our guide from Westbank Anglers about 9:30 am and drove
to a boat launch location inside Grand Teton National Park
outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With our waders on and gear
loaded in the boat we set out to float and fish down the
Snake River. It didn't take but a few minutes before we
rounded a bend in the river and I saw the Grand Tetons.
I know I'm supposed to be relaxing with a fly rod in my
hand, but I can't resist. OK, just one shot ......... and
then I'll get back to fishing, I promise. Nikon COOLPIX
P80, ISO200, Aperture Priority, EV-2.0 WB Cloudy, Lexar
2G SD Card.

#2 Working the River
... Ron and I have known each other for almost 25 years.
He is a talented photographer, a long time employee of
Nikon, and one of my best friends. Ron seems to get a
lot of pleasure out of life in general, but fishing is
a "reel" passion for him. He is an expert fly
fisherman and I enjoy watching him work the river for
trout almost as much as fishing myself. I still have my
fly rod in my hand while I took this shot of our guide
rowing and Ron fishing, so don't think that I have given
up the hunt for the catch of the day. Nikon COOLPIX P80,
ISO200, Aperture Priority, EV-2.0, WB Cloudy, Fill Flash
-1.0, Lexar 2G SD Card.

#3 Catch of the Day
... OK, I'm fishing, ...see, I'm fishing, ... and, I caught
one! Not too big, but it's a start. Guess I better get a
picture just in case I need to prove who caught the biggest
(or the smallest) of the day. Nikon COOLPIX P80, ISO200,
Aperture Priority, EV-2.0, WB Cloudy, Fill Flash -1.0, Lexar
2G SD Card.

Image #4 Sun Dried
Critter ... About mid-day we came a shore to have lunch.
Ron's fish count is above 7, and he has captured the coveted
"Trout Buck" which is awarded to the one who catches
the first catch of the day. I have just 3 fish to my credit,
but I'm famous for my late day serge. Ron decides to forego
the boat for an hour and wade up river to increase his fish
count. I decide to use the CLOSE UP mode on my COOLPIX P80
and found this little guy. Guess he should have used some
sunscreen. Nikon COOLPIX P80, ISO200, Aperture Priority,
EV-1.0, Close Up Mode, WB Cloudy, Lexar 2G SD Card.

#5 Lazy River View ...
This is not the late day serge I had in mind. That's OK,
there's plenty of Snake River left, and Ron only has 12
fish. I can ...(yawn)... still catch him. Nikon COOLPIX
P80, ISO200, Aperture Priority, EV-1.0, WB Cloudy, Lexar
2G SD Card.

#6 Catch'n Zs ... Gee,
all this fishin an floatn's makin me sleeeeeepy. Well, I got
my 4 fish, so what if Ron is well into double digits. After
all, there's plenty of river left, the sun is still high,
and if I get a little nap, ....well, Maybe I won't have the
numbers, but I'll be stronger to reel in the big catch of
the day. That's my strategy.....yep.....that's...my....strat..e..gy.
ZZZZZZZZ. Nikon COOLPIX P80, ISO200, Aperture Priority, EV-2.0,
Close Up Mode, Fill Flash-2.0, Lexar 2G SD Card. |

#7 Last Cast ... The light
really gets pretty around 4:30 pm. I've always liked making
golden hour silhouette images. Hey, what do you mean this
is the pull out point. You mean we're done? There's still
a little daylight left. Well, Ron might have caught more fish,
but I caught more ZZZZs. I guess I get the "Z Buck".
