On The Road
"Lexington, Kentucky TREK"

November, 2006

Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. Well, my sabbatical from the riggers of airports, rental cars and hotels finally came to an end this past month. With all my office work complete I left town for several jobs On The Road but decided to write about one that produced an interesting collection of pictures, the American PHOTO Mentor Series Trek in Lexington, Kentucky. The Mentor Series Treks are a great way to improve your photography and document new experiences. Fashion photographer extraordinaire Rob Van Petten and I joined forces during this wonderful Trek through the horse country of Kentucky. Let's have a look at what I found interesting to photograph while On The Road in Kentucky ...................

Image #1 Keeneland Race Course ... Since 1936 Keeneland has been one of America's premier thoroughbred race tracks. We attended Keeneland twice during the Trek and had good access to track side action, the paddock, and general facilities. I felt right at home and managed to get some images of my own while instructing the workshop participants in the finer art of horse racing photography. In particular, the slow shutter speed pan was of interest to our group. The recently remodeled Keeneland featured a new Total Board just before the finish line. Its close proximity to the inside rail created a perfect background for panning. Nikon D2Xs, ISO100, 1/13 at f14, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Lens with VR in Active Mode, WB 6300K, Lexar 4G Flash Card, Hand Held while panning. The Nikon VR mode is amazing.
Image #2 Labrot & Graham Distillery ... Home of Kentucky's finest bourbon, Woodford Reserve. Beautiful grounds and wonderful pictures. Our dawn arrival really set us up for perfect sunrise light as we explored the distillery property and buildings. A frosty morning caused my lens to fog up once I entered the first building. Someone in our group offered me a cloth to wipe away the condensation but I preferred to shoot through the fogged lens for a wonderful soft light effect. Nikon D2Xs, ISO320, 1/40 at f7.1, Nikon 17-55mm Lens, WB 7100K, Lexar 4G Flash Card. The condensation first cleared up from the center of the filter that protects the front element of my lens but remained around the edges creating a by gone era scene of the old jar of corn that is used for making Woodford Reserve Bourbon. ( NOTE: If were on my own or working on an assignment I would have used a tripod and lower ISO setting, but because my responsibility is that of instructing those on the trek I rarely spend time setting gear up for a picture. )
Image #3 Kentucky Horse Country ... Our bus driver, Ronnie, took our group through some beautiful country. Lexington is famous for its thoroughbred horse farms so I photographed many of the farms while on route to the next location. Many images shot through a bus window do not work well but sometimes I capture something I like. Our bus windows acted like giant polarizing filters. The difficult part was keeping my own reflection out of the picture so I put on my black coat and black hat. Here is one of my more successful "Drive By Shooting" images while riding on the bus. Nikon D2Xs, ISO 200, 1/1000 at f4, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7100K, Lexar 4G Flash Card ......... Bus Speed 45mph.
Image #4 Shaker Town ... One of the groups favorite destinations was Shaker Town. A small community similar to the Amish country of Pennsylvania. Beautiful grounds, farm houses and fall colors. This spiral staircase in the old community boarding house was magnificent and made a beautiful picture. Nikon D200, ISO320, 1/25 at f2.8, Nikon 10.5mm Lens, WB 10,000K, Lexar 4G Flash Card, Hand Held.
Image #5 Kentucky Horse Park ... The Kentucky Horse Park was a great wrap up our photographic Trek of Lexington, Kentucky. We were able to wonder through the barn areas, stables, and competition grounds and photograph all that we saw. I always enjoy the barn areas for detail pictures and spent time with several of the trekkers studying details of the horse racing industry. This arrangement of grooming gear will be a fine addition to my photographic archives of horse racing images. Nikon D2Xs, ISO200, 1/160 at f7.1, Nikon 17-55mm Lens, WB 7100K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.

Well, .... I hope you have enjoyed this TREK to America's thoroughbred horse racing capitol of Lexington, Kentucky. Attending a photography workshop like the American PHOTO Magazine Mentor Series is a great way to learn more about photography, your camera and how best to capture great images. If you would like more information on the American PHOTO Magazine Mentor Series log onto www.mentorseries.com Perhaps I'll see you on a future Trek ...... like Egypt ...... come along and learn with me and fellow mentor Tom Bol March 13-23 as we Trek to Egypt.

See you next time On The Road ..............Adios, Dave
