On The Road
"National Geographic Adventure Photography
Workshop"
October, 2008
Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road.
To say I was thrilled when Brett Wilhelm and Rich Clarkson asked
if I would like to join the faculty of their National Geographic
Adventure Photography Workshop would be an understatement. Yes,
of course! What a great opportunity to work along side the other
staff members like industry icons Corey Rich, Beth Wald, Keith
Ladzinski, and editors Sabin Meyer from National Geographic Adventure
Magazine and Scott Wilson from the North Face. Also joining the
faculty was Bob Smith, a wonderful nature and wildlife photographer
who lives in Jackson Hole and was a wealth of experience and knowledge
on location in the Tetons. Although there were no NFL players,
Olympians, or Motor Sports in the Tetons, Brett and Corey felt
I had expertise in areas that would clearly cross into the adventure
photography industry and help the students increase their photographic
skills. This would be a five day, sun up to sun down workshop
that would cover many aspects of the adventure photography industry.
The great outdoors is usually approached by the photographer using
the natural light, but both Keith Ladzinski and myself tend to
apply the use of strobes in our work which was just what Corey
and Brett had in mind. The students would be a range of talent
and age, but clearly centered around outdoor, adventure and life
style imagery for both editorial and commercial clients. I love
this kind of gathering of talent/instruction and I think I speak
for the entire faculty when I say we all get energized from the
five day experience.
The workshop format would be similar to all the Rich Clarkson
series of workshops, that being class room instruction, hands
on instruction in the field, daily critiques, portfolio reviews
with career counseling, and evening presentations by each member
of the faculty.
Each instructor had specific responsibilities
when working with the students. Athletes/models were available
each time we were shooting on location. Shooting scenarios ranged
from outdoor fashion wear to mountain biking, climbing, whitewater
kayaking, hiking, running, and camping. Some shoots revolved around
making editorial pictures and documentary imagery while others
keyed in on recreating commercial and advertising shoots. As instructors,
we often times divided the class into small groups, taught our
specialties and then rotated the groups so that each small group
had hands on class instruction with each of the staff. Small off-camera
flash would be my major responsibility while teaching in the field.
Most students had little or no experience with off camera flash
use on location and so my instruction was certainly something
new for many and just what Corey and Brett felt would be valuable.
Most of my class location shoots would revolve around the athletes/models
running, biking, fashion, lifestyle etc. Keith Ladzinski would
handle larger scenes of rock climbing both free and technical
with larger portable Elinchrom Ranger Strobes. Corey and Beth
would work similar scenarios using the available light while Bob
Smith rotated between all classes. Scott Wilson and Sabine Meyer
would join each small group for a time and direct/coordinate the
technical aspects of the shoots by instructing the students how
to accomplish the tasks set forth by the editor and art director.
All this was what we did on location each day, but that was not
the half of it, we also did editing, critiques, portfolio reviews,
career counseling, presentations, etc .......... and ate an occasional
Power Bar. With such a demanding schedule, and I truly mean demanding
in a very good way, I had little time to make images other than
a few examples I would make during class. Because location shoots
for each instructor and their small group were conducted in different
areas of the mountains I do not have images from any other class
location other than my own. My hope is that this article and my
sample images from my class sessions helps to give you who are
reading this article a general idea of what this workshop offers.
With all this in mind let's grab our cameras, North Face backpacks
and take a hike in the Grand Teton Mountain Range for Rich Clarkson's
National Geographic Adventure Photography Workshop in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming.

#1 Teton Trail Rider
... As I mentioned earlier, my job on location shooting
sessions was to teach the use of small off camera flash.
I use the Nikon Speedlight system which today means the
SB900 Speedlight units, but my goal was to teach location
lighting and so all my instruction related to both Nikon
and Canon flash systems. Our first morning was located near
the summit of Teton Pass where my small group teamed up
with local athletes for mountain biking, running, and also
Maria, our fashion model from Brazil. The crack of dawn
and inclement weather was just what I needed to showcase
the importance of off camera flash. I used a Chimera Speedring
that I modified with foam core to mount my Nikon SB900 Speedlight
in a small Chimera Softbox. It works reasonably well and
will be sufficient until someone manufactures a real product.
I can hand hold this softbox off camera while shooting.
I'm standing about 8 feet from my subject as he rode down
the mountainside trail. I took a demonstration shot for
the class to illustrate my point and method. Nikon D700,
ISO200, 1/25 at f11, Nikon 14-24mm lens, WB 5000K, 1 SB900
Speedlight with a small Chimera Softbox at a power output
of +0.7, Nikon SU800 Commander to trigger the SB900, Lexar
8G Flash Card.

#2 Meadow Hiker ...
Another day took us to Shadow Mountain and a beautiful
meadow area were we set up models in a lifestyle/camping
scenario. With two days of off camera flash under their
belts (or in their backpacks so to speak) I made this
demonstration image of our female model hiking through
the meadow and then gave each student a 10 minute window
of time to arrange, set up, and execute their idea of
a shoot for a magazine like Backpacker. Some got very
creative using props like a tent, backpacks, and matching
clothing and then photographed using 1,2,or 3 Speedlights.
I would coach and offer suggestions as each student would
work through their own project. Nikon D700, ISO200, 1/10
at f11, Nikon 14-24mm lens, WB 6250K, 1 Nikon SB900 Speedlight
with small Chimera Softbox at a power output of -2.0,
Nikon SU800 Commander, Lexar 8G Flash Card.

#3 Climber's Gear ...
Brett and Corey arranged for a night of camping out for
the workshop participants. Because my role as an instructor
centered around lighting and my evening presentation earlier
in the week taught and explained various lighting techniques
ranging from Small Off Camera Flash to Arena Sport Strobe
usage, and even Lightpainting, I asked Corey if I could
teach a small Lightpainting class during the night of camping
out. Always open to sharing new ideas and teaching the students
all that we could Corey agreed. Offered as an optional class
anyone who wanted to make a Lightpainting joined Ron Taniwaki
from Nikon and myself for a how to Lightpaint session and
then made their own Lightpaintings. After Lightpainting
this simple scene of climbing gear several students began
making a grand multi-student participation Lightpainting.
What a great way to end the day and then hit the sleeping
bag. Nikon D3, ISO400, 15 seconds at f16, Nikon 24-70mm
lens, WB 10,000K, Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod with Gitzo Ball
Head and Kirk "L" Bracket, INOVA XO3 LED Flashlight,
Lexar 8G Flash Card.

#5 Hiker's Portrait
..... Our final morning found us on location as the sunrise
lit up the Tetons. As the class began to walked up the hillside
to the location I was already formulating in my mind the
picture I wanted. I quickly opened my pack and assembled
my homemade Chimera softbox rig with 1 SB900, took a test
shot for the ambient exposure of the dawn lit Tetons as
I walked over to the model and made a portrait of our hiker
all in just under 1 minute, yes, that's correct, 58 seconds,
I counted out loud for the benefit of the class. My thinking
was to set an example of how quickly a lit portrait on location
can be made and that each student should strive to know
how to do this so they to could set up set up and get the
job done while the sun was perfect. Speed was not my point
as much as efficiency and knowledge of one's equipment and
the situation at hand. The class had a terrific morning
making lit portraits in a variety of locations. Nikon D700,
ISO100, 1/3200 at f2.8, Nikon 24-70mm lens, WB 6250K, 1
Nikon SB900 Speedlight with small Chimera Softbox at a power
of -3.0, Nikon SU800 Commander, Lexar 8G Flash Card.

What a fantastic 5 days of photography, learning,
friendship, and adventure. I really enjoyed the entire experience
and must thank Brett Wilhelm, Corey Rich, and Rich Clarkson for
having me to the National Geographic Adventure Workshop. This
was a terrific workshop that I must recommend highly for those
who are photographing outdoors/adventure life style imagery. The
knowledge and insight that Corey, Beth, Keith, Sabin, Scott and
Bob provided each day was so valuable. Well organized and well
executed, this workshop achieves the highest of standards which
is the way Rich Clarkson's series of workshops are always conducted.
Hope you enjoyed this brief look at the National Geographic Adventure
Workshop and that this article communicates the importance of
off camera lighting on location even in the high country of the
Tetons.
See you On the Road next time .................. Adios. Dave
