On The Road
"High Country Journey"

October, 2007

Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. Summer has come and gone and my head turns towards my favorite season,... Autumn. Last months On the Road took many of you down a walking path in Pennsylvania, a quiet sanctuary that gave me rest on my way to work while on the road. Writing that article inspired me to take a drive, and so with my wife at the steering wheel, myself in the passenger seat and my camera in hand we drove off on a high country journey across Colorado.

Shooting landscapes and scenic pictures is not my usual MO, but I'm no different than many photographers who enjoy making images of Gods great outdoors. Colorado is a state that excels in beautiful landscapes. If I was by myself I would stop every 10 miles, set up a tripod and carefully compose a frame or two, but that wouldn't be fare to my wife who loves to drive along and see as many new roads as the day can hold. And so it goes, she drives ....... I shoot out the window while On The Road.

Image #1 Me On the Road ... I'm "closer than I appear" in the rearview mirror of my truck. While Susan happily drives along through the country side of the Rocky Mountain state I'm perfectly content to roll down the window, shoot some pictures of the landscape rushing by at 60 mph at 1/30 of a second. It is a nice departure from the overtime Denver Broncos vs Oakland Raiders football game just a few days earlier. Oh I had a great time working at the game. Made some good images as well, but I so enjoy the involvement of photography that I find taking these pictures just as satisfying.

Image #2 Horse Country ... We took a few roads and saw a few towns we hadn't seen before. This horse ranch was somewhere west of the town of Kremling. The area offered a great life style of raising horses and cattle along with plenty of opportunity for hunting and fishing. It looked inviting but we both imagined that the winter would be a bit on the cold and windy side, but this day was perfect, warm and sunny as the late day sun poured through the hills and ridges that lay west of town. I'm always looking for this kind of contrast between deep cool shadows and warm golden sunlight illuminating the fall colors of the trees adjacent to the pasture.

Image #3 High Country Aspens ... Our westward travel took us up and over several passes. Pine tree after pine tree whizzed by my passenger window as we drove on towards the setting sun and then the pines opened up to reveal this beautiful stand of Aspens. Photographing at 65 mph can be a challenge and good training with regards to sharpening one's skills to compose, expose and shoot a picture in a split second, 1/1250 to be specific. I didn't even have time to roll down the window but that OK, the window acts like a polarizer filter and helps deepen the sky and colors.
Image #4 Indian Summer ... The next morning we were off and going again. There was plenty of Colorado we hadn't seen including this river side Tee Pee. It was a lovely sight with early morning light and shadows. The crisp cool air kept me a million miles away from my office, computer and cell phone. This road offered a 30 mph speed limit and a 1/500 of a second shutter speed to capture this Indian Summer Tee Pee as we drove by.

Image #5 Buena Vista Shower ... Finally turning east we stopped for a few minutes to watch a storm build over the Collegiate Peaks region. The late afternoon rain storm pattern that had prevailed over the state during the summer months was active and provided a beautiful scene for our return drive home. The overlook on the cliffs above the valley gave us a grand panoramic view from which I took several images while the storm began to intensify.

Image #6 The Rain Cloud ... This is one of my favorite pictures from the trip, a rain cloud over the eastern edge of South Park. South Park is a wide high plains area that caters to Antelope and Buffalo. The late day weather pattern that I mentioned in the previous picture was again building yet another storm. I love the way the rain is falling and the sun streaks make a criss-cross pattern. The storm seemed so close but at 75 mph it appeared motionless as we drove along and watched it build up for several miles.
Image #7 The Road Home ... Fall weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Rockies. This beautiful day was capped with an early evening rain storm complete with one of the most vibrant rainbows I've ever seen much less photographed. Driving east towards our home near Pikes Peek we followed the storm and rainbow for sometime before over taking it. It was a perfect ending to a perfect journey around our state.

The joy of making pictures is in my heart. I have always loved to make pictures. I don't need to sell them to enjoy making them. The sale of my photography is a wonderful by product of my desire to compose, capture and communicate to others what I have seen. Photography is my business but making pictures is truly my heart. I love what I do and am thankful for opportunities that have been placed before me over the years.

I hope you have enjoyed this little high country journey. See you next time On The Road. Adios, Dave
