On The Road
"The International Golf Tournament"

September, 2006

Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. I stayed close to home this past month to get some much needed work done in the office, but like most business men I managed to break away from the grindstone for a little golf .............. The International Golf Tournament at Castle Pines in Colorado. I left the office with my normal "M.O." (mode of operation), that being to document all that there is about the event as if I was gathering images for a coffee table book. I would only be shooting one day of competition, so I arrived early and stayed late. There were specific things to do and people to get for my client but for the most part I was asked to find interesting images of golf and what makes the International special. Here are some images from the first round of play.......

Image #1 Arrive Early ... No matter what the weather is I always like to arrive early. Skies were heavily overcast at 7am but I followed Camilo Villegas who began his first round of play on the back 9. After a few holes not only did the skies open up but so did a wonderful opportunity to capture an image of his drive from a profile location with a long lens. Nikon D200, ISO250, 1/1600 at f4, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens, WB 6700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #2 Big Easy ... Ernie Els is coming back from knee surgery and so I decided to show him walking briskly over the bridge at #11. Nikon D2X, ISO200, 1/250 at f5.6, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7700K, Lexar 4G Flash card.
Image #3 Foot Joy ... The Castle Pines Golf Course is located on the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 6300 feet. The steep terrain and thin air made the round of play a greater challenge than most golf courses. Many golfers elected to use smaller lightweight bags but some saddled their caddies with the professional tour bag which made for an up hill battle for oxygen. Nikon D2X, ISO160, 1/500 at f5.6, Nikon 12-24mm Lens, WB 7700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #4 David Duval ... The local favorite from Denver set the current trend of wearing sunglasses during golf competition some years ago. The 6th tee provided excellent access and a nice picture of the breaking skies over Castle Pines reflected in Duval's shades. Nikon D200, ISO320, 1/1250 at f5, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens, WB 6300K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #5 Practice, Practice, Practice... On my way to find Sergio Garcia at the first tee I passed through practice green area. I wanted something graphic that would illustrate golf practice. This arrangement of putters and a lone golf ball was a nice scene that worked well. Nikon D200, ISO200, 1/160 at f22, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens, WB 6700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #6 Tee Time ... High Noon sunshine and Sergio Garcia at the 644 yard par 5 first tee. I used my Nikon Coolpix camera with 8 mega pixels and silent shutter to capture Sergio during his backswing. The convenience of the built in zoom lens allowed me to frame him against the backdrop of this massive fairway and a view of the Rockies. Nikon Coolpix 8800, ISO200, Aperture Priority (1/1200 at f3.3), EV -0.3, WB Cloudy, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #7 Sand Blast ... When Retief Goosen's ball landed in a sand trap close to the ropes I chose to do a close up shot rather than a standard full body image. I shot one frame and managed to capture the ball, still compressed from the club impact, beginning it's flight from the bunker. This is a different kind of detail shot that says "golf".......... I like it. Nikon D200, ISO400, 1/6400 at f 5.6, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens, WB 6700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #8 The International Champion ... Dean Wilson was the eventual winner of this year's International at Castle Pines. His steady play and near perfect swing made for great pictures during my one day of first round coverage. This shot was made by placing the camera in the grass and using the swivel LED display on the Coolpix 8800 to view and compose the image. The silent shutter of the Coolpix allowed me to shoot during Wilson's backswing. Nikon Coolpix 8800, ISO200, Aperture Priority (1/1500 at f 4.7), EV -0.7, WB Cloudy, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #9 The Peoples Choice ... Phil Mickelson, win or loose, is the peoples choice wherever he goes. My day at The International was winding down as Phil tees off at #18. It's about 5pm and the sun is low enough in the sky to create some beautiful shadows. Attendance during the first round of play was thin which left a section of stadium seating wide open and a perfect location for this image of Phil's drive. Nikon Coolpix 8800, ISO200, Aperture Priority (1/1200 f3.6), EV -0.7, WB Cloudy, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #10 Great Light ... You might think that with a solid picture of Phil Mickelson captured I could head home ................. but not just yet. As the sun continues to set the shadows and shafts of sunlight become more pronounced. This is the perfect time of day to make great pictures ... and it doesn't matter who is playing. Past experience tells me that I'm far enough away that the sound of the shutter will not be heard by the player so I can use my D200 during the backswing. Nikon D200, ISO200, 1/1000 at f5, Nikon 200-400mm G VR Zoom Lens, WB 7700K, Lexar 4G Flash Card.
Image #11 Stay Late ... I worked the light until there wasn't any left and completed my day with a lovely image of a caddie writing his finale notes in the yardage book. Nikon D200, ISO200, 1/1000 at f4.0, Nikon 200-400mm, WB 7700, Lexar 4G Flash Card.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed this day of work at The International. There are so many interesting pictures to make during the process of covering even a single day of an event. If you arrive early and stay late you are certain to reap the rewards of your efforts at the end of the day.

See you next time On The Road ................................. Adios, Dave
