On The Road
February, 2005
Hi and welcome to the February edition
of On The Road. This month there is a nice variety of images and
techniques that were encountered while On The Road. Let's have
a look.............
|
|
Image#1 Peyton Manning...Destined
to be one of the great quarterbacks of the NFL, I was excited
to be able to make it to the Denver vs Indianapolis Game at
Mile High. Manning was only expected to work one series of
downs for the playoff bound Colts and so I, like many others,
captured images of him given the small window of opportunity.
This image of manning taking the field was my favorite because
it is unique. Over cast skies created a perfect situation
for a slow shutter speed to blur the background and an SB800
remote to light Peyton. Nikon D2H, ISO200, 1/60 at f14, Rear
Curtain, WB5300K, Nikon 12-24mm lens, SB800 Master on camera
with 1 SB800 remote I hand held to my left, power output +1,
Lexar 2G Flash Card. |
|
Image#2 Peyton Manning...Making use
of the warm up is a good idea when covering a player. Although
Manning completed only two passes during his cameo appearance
during the game, I liked this image captured while he was
warming up. Nikon D2H, ISO500, 1/1000 at f4, WB5300K, Nikon
400mm lens with TC14E 1.4 Teleconverter, Lexar 2G Flash
Card.

Image#3 Conference Rivals...Colorado State
vs Air Force is a very competitive rivalry. This image is
usually captured with a remote camera triggered with Multi
Max Pocket Wizzards...........but not this time. On occasion
(with permission from the Sports Information Dept.) I will
shoot from the catwalk. I do this in an effort to better study
the design of the scene and shadow patterns created by the
sport strobe. I do not shoot many frames but find that the
time spent studying from above pays off. Nikon D2H, ISO320,
1/250 sync, at f8, WB5600K Nikon 70-200mm lens, One Elinchrom
1200RX Sport Strobe with standard reflector (located in the
catwalk above the corner of the court) triggered with Pocket
Wizzard Multi Max Transceivers from the camera to the strobe,
Bogen Super Clamp and safety strap, Lexar 2G Flash card. NOTE:
I remove the lens hood from the lens and use the neck strap
and a safety strap to insure there will be no mishaps with
my hand held camera. I also remove all items from my pockets
and my credential to make sure nothing will drop from my catwalk
position. And for those who wear a cap......remove it completely
rather than turn it backwards. I would also suggest picking
up any loose trash that might be in your area above the court.

Image#4 Leg Up...at the US Figure Skating
Nationals in Portland, Oregon. Sasha Cohen had all the skills
and grace to win but still remains a bridesmaid in second
place. Nikon D2H, ISO640, 1/800 at f2.8, WB5600K, Nikon
300mm f2.8 Lens, Nikon Pistol Grip, Lexar 2G Flash Card.
Practice makes perfect...I spent several hours studying
the top skaters at various practice sessions in an effort
to become familiar with their unique skills and where on
the ice they would be performed. This helped me maximize
my coverage for the client and give me an edge over my fellow
photographers.

Image#5 A Dreamy Look...with Michelle Kwan
during the Chevrolet Exhibition of Champions. I have many
images of Michelle performing her signature skill the Spiral
from the time she was 11 years old through her current 9th
National title. This time I wanted something different, unique
and more representative of Michelle's artistry. I used a slower
shutter speed and Nikon's VR technology to help create this
image. Nikon D2H, ISO200, 1/15 at f6.3, WB5900K, Nikon 200-400
G VR Lens ( VR Normal Mode), Hand Held, Lexar 2G Flash Card.
The slow shutter speed of 1/15th of a second created a blurred
effect on the ice and Michelle. The VR feature of Nikon's
200-400mm G VR Lens stabilized the panning lines and her face
thus creating a dream like feeling to the image. |
Well...another month is in the record
books. I hope you have enjoyed this February edition of images
and information. Please join me again next month when we go On
The Road.
