On The Road
"A Southwest Tour"
May, 2008
Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. A few weeks
ago I received an invitation to go to Las Vegas and celebrate
Bart Conner's 50th birthday. Bart and I go way back. I have known
him since his high school days, photographed him throughout his
Olympic gymnastics career and also photographed his wedding in
Romania when he married Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci. Rather
than fly to Las Vegas my wife Susan and I decided to drive. This
would serve as a get-away road trip for us both and a "site
survey" for some future projects I have in mind. My landscape
photography abilities are improving as are the stock image sales
and print making. Along the 2,250 miles we would eventually cover
I wanted very much to see what kind of Lightpainting potential
might be possible in south-central Utah and northern Arizona.
So, with the truck loaded up let's see what's On the Road across
the great Southwest ...

Image
#1 Mesa Verde ... Our
first stop was Mesa Verde just shy of the Four Corners area.
Some these Puebloan Cliff Dwellings are open to the public
to walk through. The Spruce Tree House provided an interior
look at a spiritual Kiva. The cliff dwellings are truly
spectacular, (see this months Workshop at the Ranch article
for Mesa Verde Cliff Palace PANORAMA), and definitely hold
some potential for Lightpainting. Nikon D3, ISO1250, 1/50
at f7.1, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points, Nikon 14-24mm
Lens, WB Auto A6, Picture Control Standard, Lexar 8G Flash
Card. Site survey complete ... on to the next stop.

#2 Monument Valley ... I
love John Wayne westerns and some of his greatest films
were made in Monument valley by legendary director John
Ford. Monument Valley became more of a drive through site
survey while on route to our day's ultimate destination
of the Grand Canyon, but not before I made some images
to give me food for thought regarding a possible return
visit to Lightpaint the East and West Mittens. I seldom
use a polarizer filter, but made good use of one here
because we arrived at High Noon. Nikon D3, ISO400, 1/200,
at f18, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points, Nikon 24-70mm
Lens, WB 6250K, Picture Control VIVID, Lexar 8G Flash
Card. Next stop, the Grand Canyon.

#3 Grand Canyon ... Once we
arrived at the Grand Canyon I wasted no time in making some
images including some panoramas (see this months Workshop
at the Ranch article for Grand Canyon PANORAMA.) The next
day we found this flowering lone Agave plant standing tall
at the far west end of the canyon a few miles from the Hopi
reservation's glass Sky Walk, but there was no time for
a Tequila sunset and we hit the road again. Nikon D3, ISO200,
1/200 at F22, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points, Nikon 24-70mm
Lens, WB 6670K, Picture Control VIVID, Lexar 8G Flash Card.

Image #4 Road to Las Vegas
... We're getting closer to Las Vegas and are approaching
the Hoover Dam where Arizona meets Nevada. With Susan at
the steering wheel I made a fun Drive By Shooting of ourselves
cruising along the Arizona landscape at 65 mph. Nikon D3,
ISO100, 1/20 at f13, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points, Nikon
24-70mm Lens, WB 7140K, Picture Control VIVID, Lexar 8G
Flash Card.

#5 Flamingo Dice ... The birthday
party for Bart was wonderful. So many friends and so many
memories. Susan and I stayed at the Flamingo Resort and
Casino which is a bit of a throw back to Vegas of old during
the Rat Pack days ...Very PINK. Nikon D3, ISO100, 8 Seconds
at f18, Manual Focus, Nikon 105mm Micro Lens with step-up
ring adapter for a Canon Close up Filter, Gitzo Tripod with
Gitzo Ball Head, Kirk "L" Bracket, WB 6670K, Picture
Control STANDARD, 2 Stylus Streamlights to Lightpaint with,
Lexar 8G Flash Card. The seemingly airborne dice are placed
on an 8in X10in piece of picture frame glass suspended over
Susan's Flamingo pink sweatshirt by two coffee mugs about
4 inches high. I used 2 Stylus Streamlights to Lightpaint
with. One has a bare bulb while the other has a snoot with
black masking tape over the front and a thin cut slice opening
in it. The Stylus StreamLight with the taped snoot and sliced
opening made a perfect 3/8 inch shaft of light across the
word Flamingo for 2 seconds which gave me enough extra time
to add some light on top of and beneath the dice using the
bare bulb Stylus Streamlight. The close up filter added
to the Nikon 105mm Micro Lens REALLY brings your subject
up close. For those who like macro imagery this is a combination
you can bet on.

#6 Bryce Canyon Hoodoos ... After leaving Vegas and Bart's
50th behind we entered Utah where I had a personalized lunch
in St. George, then cut across Zion and headed for Bryce Canyon.
Hoodoos are numerous in this landscape and I saw great potential
for Lightpaintings. Arriving late in the afternoon we had
ample time to site survey for future locations and make some
sunset Hoodoorific images as well. This area offers easy access
and spectacular scenery that is perfect for Lightpainting
... I shall return, but for now, we got to get going..... Nikon
D3, ISO400, 1/400 at f7.1, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points,
Nikon 70-200mm Zoom Lens, WB 6670K, Picture Control VIVID,
Lexar 8G Flash Card. |
Image
#7 Road Across Utah ... We decided to push on and leave Bryce
in the rearview mirror, but not before the sun set over the
south-central Utah ranchlands near Panquitch. As is our normal
MO, Susan is driving and I am photographing. A spectacular
sunset that we nearly stopped for, but kept on driving so
as to make Grand Junction by midnight so I rolled down the
passenger window and made a picture going 60 mph. I made several
notations regarding possible ranch sites that might make interesting
Lightpaintings as we drove north into central Utah. Nikon
D3, ISO1600, 1/640 at f2.8, 3D Focus Tracking with 51 points,
Nikon 14-24mm Lens, WB 8000K, Picture Control STANDARD, Lexar
8G Flash Card. |

#8 Stars Above Green River ... One of my favorite images of
the entire trip. Nearing the Colorado boarder around 11:00
pm Susan and I noticed that the were thousands of stars clearly
visible from horizon to horizon. So we stopped to stretch
our legs and take a quick picture somewhere east of Green
River, Utah. I set the Nikon D3 camera with a high ISO of
6400 and a 30 second exposure time at f2.8 and placed it facing
skyward on the roof of our parked truck and took one picture.
Unbelievable! The stars where so distinct ... and with colors
... red, blue, and yellow. I'm no astronomer, but the Milky
Way also seemed visible in the upper 1/3 of the frame. What
a beautiful night sky and grand thoughts of potential Lightpainting
filled my mind on the way to Grand Junction. Nikon D3, ISO6400,
30 second exposure at f2.8, Manual Focus, Nikon 14-24mm Lens,
WB 8000K, Lexar 8G Flash Card. |
Well, I hope you have enjoyed this 2,250 mile
On the Road trip. It was great to see Bart and many long time
friends, and I learned a lot and made several notations and voice
memos regarding possible Lightpainting locations. I plan to retrace
our trip someday soon with my portable battery operated 2 million
candle powered Brinkmann Spotlights for nocturnal projects. A
site survey is well worth the time and effort. Making Lightpaintings
during the course of several nights in a row is difficult and
requires careful planning in order to maximize the time spent
and make unique images.
See you next time On The Road. Adios, Dave
