BEST of On The Road
May, 2004
Hi and welcome to the May issue of
On The Road. I have decided to showcase one event that was one
of the greatest events I have ever been able to cover. I am speaking
of the Masters at Augusta National. I would be having the pleasure
of working for Golf World / Golf Digest Magazine and editor Matt
Ginella. My job was simple yet complex. I was to document all
I saw that involved the Masters both inside the ropes and out.
So without further a'dou.........a Cinderella story..............

TUESDAY I began each day very
early and ended late after everyone had left. This is the
mowing team in perfect synchronization coming down the first
fairway at 7:00pm. Maintenance is a large part of Augusta.
It seemed to go endless into the night. Nikon D2H, ISO 200,
Nikon 70mm-200mmVR Zoom. |
|
WEDNESDAY The Par 3 tournament is very
popular and attracts huge galleries. I chose to illustrate
its fan popularity through the eyes of the leader board
score keeper. I liked this image as a different way to show
both the Par 3 event and its following. Nikon D2H, ISO 200,
70mm-200mm VR Zoom.

THURSDAY The first day of the Masters.....and
it rained ! I was thrilled to have rain as I had hoped for
an opportunity to capture images of colorful umbrellas. The
first green provided a high vantage point for just such a
shot and Jack Nicklaus is the golfer. Nikon COOLPIX 8700,
ISO100, w/ Wide Angle Converter. |
|
FRIDAY Tiger Woods ( el Tigre' ) tees
off at 16. There were three other photographers working
for the magazine. J.D., Dom, and Steven. The best in the
business. I was the rookie, having little golf experience.
It was very exciting to photograph Tiger. Nikon D2H, ISO
200, Nikon 400mm f2.8 lens.

SATURDAY People arrive before sunrise at
the Masters. I began each day with lightpainting and dawn
imagery. A beautiful fog bank formed between the 1st and 9th
fairways at 6:00am. NikonD2H, ISO320, 70mm-200mmVR Zoom. |
|
SATURDAY There were many golfers climbing
the leader board on Saturday including Fred Couples here
at the 13th green. NikonD2H, ISO 200, Nikon 400mm f2.8 lens.

SUNDAY The Masters Champion, Phil Mickelson,
tees off at 18 on his way to the green jacket. Nikon COOLPIX8700
w/ Wide Angle Converter, ISO200, Aperture Priority 2.8 EV-0.7 |
|
SUNDAY I followed several golfers on
Sunday but picked up Mickelson at 10 and stayed with him
till the victory. Phil Mickelson jumps for joy after sinking
his put at the 18th green. Nikon D2H, ISO250, 400mm f2.8
lens.

These 8 images are only a speck of
the total volume of images I captured at the Masters. I shot images
of everything from Azaleas to greens keepers, fans to Arnie, and
the moon setting over the Augusta National Clubhouse. I have never
enjoyed myself and my work more. Thank you to Matt Ginella and
the photographers of Golf World / Golf Digest who made my job
not only a pleasure but one of the most exciting weeks of my career.
Adios, Dave
