On The Road
April, 2004
Hi again, and welcome to this edition of On The
Road. From Madison Square Garden to Western Kentucky University
at Bowling Green, this months On The Road covered some miles.........

The American Cup Gymnastics competition
returned to the Big Apple and Madison Square Garden for the
first time in 17 years. A preview to the Athens Olympics,
this invitational of Olympic gymnastics contenders provided
some great images. This is a stitched composite image that
combines two images that are stitched together in Photoshop
to make a panorama. Blain Wilson, USA, displays both strength
and tattoos while training on the Rings. The two images are
horizontals stitched together at the elbow. Stitching is used
in landscape images to make panoramas. I thought I would give
it a try. Nikon D2H, ISO500, WB4200K, 1/200 shutter, 300mm
f2.8 lens. Lexar 1G Flash Card. |
|
The day before the American Cup I captured
some nice generic images at an USA Elite competition in
the Garden. Here, young gymnasts prepare for the Uneven
Bars. Nikon D2H, ISO400, 1/160 shutter, WB4200K, Nikon 300mm
f2.8 lens, Lexar 1G Flash Card.

Pat Manson USA on his way to clear 18feet
plus. Nikon D2H, ISO200, 1/250 sync, Nikon 300mm at f 8, Lexar
1G Flash Card, 4 Elinchrom 1000R sport Strobes triggered wireless
with Pocket Wizzard Multi Max's.The multiple focus zones in
the D2H really make a big difference in accurate focusing.
Hand held with an original Nikon Pistol Grip. |

Men's Shot Put from a catwalk remote.
1 Elinchrom 1000R Sport Strobe with a Long Throw Reflector,
a Nikon D2H, triggered wireless by a Pocket Wizzard Multi
Max. I like the long shadow look and the color. A net around
the platform created the net shadow pattern. Nikon D2H,
ISO200, WB Flash, 70-200mmVR lens at f5.6. Bogen Super Clamp
and Magic Arm, Lexar 1G Flash Card.

Ladies Shot Put from the ground. Hand held
Nikon D2H, ISO200, WB Flash, Nikon 70-200VR lens at f8, Lexar
1G Flash Card. Two Elenchrom 1000R Sport Strobes set up in
the catwalks with Bogen Super Clamps and Long Throw Reflectors
in a Cross Light arraignment. Triggered wireless with the
Multi Max's. |

This image was part of my ARENA LIGHTING
with SPORT STROBES presentation at the first ever NIKON
COLLEGE WORKSHOP at Western Kentucky University in Bowling
Green Kentucky. Rick Rickman, Joe McNally and myself spent
4 days at Western working with the photo journalism students.
The students were FANTASTIC ! and ENTHUSIASTIC ! Never have
I had so much fun! With students taking on the tasks of
DOCUMENTARY/STORY, ARENA STROBE LIGHTING, and STUDIO/LOCATION
LIGHTING, groups of students rotated each day to the instructors
for in-depth sessions of hands on learning and image making.
All the students were well prepared by PJ department director
James Kenney and his staff for the 4 days of concentrated
learning. Nikon sponsored the workshop with additional equipment
support from Bogen (Justin Stailey) and Roberts Distributors
(Jody Grober). We strobed the Sun Belt Basketball tournament
and the University swimming pool,... documented the HS Basketball
Tournament and the Drag Races,.... and studio lit Ballet
Dancers and Football Players at various locations in Bowling
Green ! I was thrilled to be a part of this workshop with
great learning, rock n roll, and FUN ! These students are
an indication that the future of this industry is very bright.
Thanks NIKON and WESTERN KENTUCKY for a FANTASTIC 4 days
! (THANKS to Waffle House.....and Bob Evens...... for keeping
the staff going strong with grits and cherry cobbler)
