On The Road

January, 2004

Happy New Year and welcome to the January edition of On The Road 2004. One year ago I launched my website and the two pages that have been a big success with over 700 people logging on each each month to Workshop at the Ranch and On The Road. Know man is an island and so it is with me. This website would not have been as user friendly and well designed without the work of Eric Murphy of Two Doors Design and Photography. I am a photographer, not a computer expert. Eric is both a computer expert and a very talented photographer. Do yourself a favor and visit the MASTER of WEB, the JEDI of MEGABITES, the..............well, you get the idea,... check out his website at www.2doors.com.

Here we go into a new year, so let's start off with....................football.

Many photographers put down their cameras when the teams head to the locker room after the pregame warmup. I guess I am always looking for something. Shannon Sharpe of the Denver Broncos already had his game face on and his helmet off for this image as he and teammates head for the locker room. Nikon D2H, ISO200, Aperture Priority, WB Auto with Hue-3( this is where I have my D2H Cameras set to add a cooler cast to the whites), Nikon 400mm f2.8 lens, Lexar 1G Flash Card, hand held.
Tony Gonzalez WR for the Kansas City Chiefs runs into daylight through the black curtain shadow of INVESCO Field at Mile High. Nikon D2H, ISO500, Aperture Priority, WB Auto, Nikon 400mm f2.8 lens with TC14E 1.4X Teleconverter, Lexar 1G Flash Card, Hand Held. I chose the High ISO as the play began in the shadow. Aperture Priority was the perfect choice for this situation as the light changed about 3stops from shadow to sunlight.
Touchdown run#4 by Clinton Portis of Denver. Under the lights of Mile High this was one of Clinton's record breaking touchdown runs. I especially like this shot for several reasons. Key game, Key Player, Key play, and you can see his facial expression and his eye looking over his shoulder at the distant Chiefs player. Nikon D2H, ISO800, 1/640/2.8, WB Auto,.....HAND HELD. No I did not forget my mono-pod. I hand hold whenever I can. I am quicker and can squeeze into places much the way sideline TV guys do.
Clinton Portis and the Championship belt mobbed by the media after his record breaking game. My first oppertunity to use a Nikon Speedlight with the D2H. Nikon D2H, ISO400, Aperture Priority EV-0.3, Nikon 12-24 f4 lens, SB-80DX Speedlight TTL -1 1/3, Lexar 1G Flash Card.
WHOA !.....Here is a change of pace. The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finals. Sasha Cohen came in as the Favorite but left #2 to Fumie Suguri of Japan. Nikon D2H, ISO800, WB 5000K, Nikon400mm f2.8 lens, Lexar 1G Flash Card,..........Hand Held. I found a sweet spot next to Mike the ABC TV Camera operator at ice level. If I used a mono pod I would obstruct his view so...no mono pod and I can sit in a chair all night.......SWEET !
I really got lucky here........NOT. I try not to count on luck, but faith. I came to the arena one day early and watched the ice dancers skate through the Original Program which has a definite pattern. So... up goes the remote over the clean section of ice where the fast footwork part of the Original Program is....and it is no coincidence that this image shows the ladies dress flying out. COME EARLY and STAY LATE always pays off. Nikon D2H, ISO1000, 1/800sec at f2.8, Nikon 70-200VR lens, WB 5000K, Pocket Wizzard MULTI MAX wireless Transceiver to trigger the remote.
Beautiful Colors and Dance Movement can create a wonderful image especially at my favorite creative shutter speed for figure skating , 1/13thsec. Nikon D2H, ISO200,WB 5000K, Nikon400mmf2.8lenswith TC14E 1.4X Teleconverter 1/13sec f11...............and yes, Hand Held.
January is Super Bowl month to many sports fans. This is a photograph of the 1923 Green Bay Professionals who became better known as the Green Bay Packers. My fathers father,...my Grandfather, was close friends with Earl " Curly " Lambeau. My fathers house has several items that marked their friendship including Packer photographs from the 1920's, songbooks with the " OFFICIAL " Green Bay Packer FIGHT SONG, and an original share of Green Bay Packer stock that my Grandfather and Curly Lambeau sold door to door to the towns people of Green Bay. 1923......obviously not my image, but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this rare photograph. Curly Lambeau is in the top row, far left.

That's it. Well, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and Santa brought you everything you asked for. As for me, I have God, Family and Country to be thankfull for. And my work and friends and all of you who come each month and take a walk...... On The Road...........see you next time. Remember, I always look forward to those of you who email questions and comments to me during each month. Keep them coming............... Adios, Dave
