On The Road
January, 2006
Hi and welcome to this edition of On The Road. I am
always looking for interesting pictures to capture. While I love
shooting sports I realize that diversity is important not only
for business but for a much needed break from the usual. So....here
is a real departure from the playing field...............
Image
#1 Swan Lake...These young ladies are as athletic as any
Olympian on the road to Beijing. The Holiday Tea with Tchaikovsky
presented by Colorado's Classical Youth Ballet was a wonderful
performance which featured excerpts from three famous ballets
that made beautiful pictures. If anyone wants to practice
their peak action timing, this is a great venue to test
your skill. A shutter speed of 1/160 of a second was tops
with an ISO of 800. Perfect timing, patience and a good
ear is required to freeze movements of these ballerinas.
Nikon D2X, ISO800, 1/160 at f2.8, WB 10,000K (to add extra
warmth to the stage light), Nikon 70-200 VR lens, Lexar
4G Flash Card.

#2 Swans a Leaping...The stage lighting was a mixture so I
changed the WB to Auto and found it to capture skin tones
perfectly. Nikon D2X, ISO800, 1/160 atf2.8, WB Auto, Nikon
70-200mm VR Lens, Lexar 4G Flash Card. The young ladies were
perfectly synchronized with their leaps which gave a nice
symmetrical design when photographed. This kind of single
shot timing is a real test of the photographers ability to
anticipate the peak of the action.

#3 Jewel Fairies...Sleeping Beauty included three Jewel
Fairies dressed in elegant costumes with all three perfectly
on toe. Again, timing needed to be precise to freeze the
moment at 1/160 of a second. I used the beat of the music
to aide me in releasing the shutter at the perfect time.
Nikon D2X, ISO800, 1/160th at f2.8, WB Auto, Nikon 70-200mm
Lens, Lexar 4G Flash Card.

#4 Fairy Tale...The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier Grand
Pas de Deux command the attention of everyone. Nikon D2X,
ISO800, 1/160th at f2.8, WB Auto, Nikon 70-200mm VR Lens,
Lexar 4G Flash Card. This pose was held only for the moment
in time with the beat of the music. It is the beat of the
music together with my visual reaction time that helped
me freeze the exact moment.

#5 Finale...The Nutcracker is a classic ballet that provided
wonderful pictures. I exercised great patience and captured
my images with great care while the company whirled about
the stage. So often, we as photographers click away too thoughtlessly,
but by listening to the music I was able to time my shutter
release with the tempo and freeze the action better than if
I had only visually timed my shots. Gymnastics Floor Exercise
and Figure Skating can be more effectively photographed if
the photographer uses the beat of the music to aide them in
the timing of their shots. Nikon D2X, ISO800, 1/160 at f2.8,
WB Auto, Nikon 70-200mm VR Lens, Lexar 4G Flash Card.

All photographers will be faced with
challenging lighting and the task of freezing the action sometime
during their career. Sometimes it's the Ladies' Olympic Figure
Skating finals and sometimes it is the local youth ballet or perhaps
a son or daughter in a stage production at school. If the photographer
exercises some patience and chooses their moments with some thought
instead of a motor drive the results can be very rewarding. Let
me extend my thanks to the the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs
for allowing me to photograph the holiday performance. If you
would like more information on the Ballet Society of Colorado
Springs contact Patty Hoffman at 719-272-7078 or visit the website
at www.balletsocietyofcoloradosprings.com.
Well..........I hope you all have enjoyed this
departure from the playing field. See you next time..........On
The Road.
Adios, Dave
